Armed police are currently on the scene in Covent Garden after reports that the vehicle smashed into people at shoppers watched on in horror.
There are reports of ‘multiple injuries’, while one person is believed to have been trapped under the taxi.
Witness Ed Hoppitt tweeted: “Just came within meters of being hit by a vehicle that mounted the pavement and ploughed into people.
“People down under taxi.”
Another witness wrote: “We just walked outside the theatre & a Taxi just drove into a crowd of people walking past. Inches from us.”
The driver of the cab is currently being held by police.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: ‘Police were called at 17:01hrs on Wednesday, 1 November to reports of a taxi in collision with pedestrians in Southampton Street, WC2.
‘Officers and the other emergency services attended the scene. We are aware of injuries but await further confirmation.
‘The driver of the taxi stopped at the scene and has been detained by police.
‘This is being treated as a serious road traffic collision, and not thought to be terrorist related.’
