Defence Secretary Williamson demands REMOVAL of all EU flags from Ministry of Defence property

The Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson has demanded the removal of all EU flags from Ministry of Defence property after he noticed that the ‘ring of stars’ was flying in a number of prominent locations.

This is a pretty strong message from Williamson, especially as he was an ardent campaigner for Remain before the EU referendum in June 2016.

However, like so many others in society, he is a Remain voter who has now come to terms with the fact that Brexit is happening and needs to be delivered in a timely manner.

According to a report in The Sun:

DEFENCE Secretary Gavin Williamson has ordered all EU flags be removed from MoD headquarters.

Sources said he was stunned to find them at the London HQ, including outside meeting rooms.

So he told officials to take down the blue flags adorned with 12 gold stars and replace them with Union Jacks to boost “British pride.”

An insider, said: “Gavin said he saw no reason why they should waste any time on delaying the removal of the EU flags.

He wants more British pride displayed around the building as Britain gets ready to quit the EU.”

The symbolic salvo comes despite his campaigning for Remain.

Well done to Mr Williamson!

Although many will argue that the flags should stay while we are technically inside the European Union until March 2019 (that point is up for debate, but that’s another story), it cannot be denied that having the flag in such a prominent setting is sending out the wrong message.

Their removal would be a symbolic gesture that this government is preparing to take a harder line with Brexit, the same ‘harder line’ that millions of Brits voted for in June 2016.

It has already been established that Britain has no intention of reneging on its European defence obligations, so we cannot see how it would do any harm.

After all, we are committed to working with European Union member states in any way possible, just without the anthems, bureaucracy, unelected overlords, and of course FLAGS!

There has been an outpouring of support on social media for Mr Williamson after he made these comments – here are some of the best posts:

Where has this man come from. Great stuff Gavin. We only ever hear of betrayers and remainers in Parliament.

Well done to Gavin at least someone has the right idea.

At last a man with balls warming to him – like what he says.

About time somebody started talking about us and not that lot of Muppets in Europe. Put them in the bin.

I think they should ALL be removed from every building and car number plates.

Good… a man with balls not like all the other pathetic spineless lot.

A lot of people have been using this case to ask why Williamson is not more involved in the Brexit negotiations – that is an interesting question.

Here we have a Remain campaigner who is prepared to speak out on behalf of those who did vote to Leave, and on the other hand we have a Prime Minister who campaigned for Remain and is now actively trying to bow down to Brussels at every given opportunity.
